This place says it is the oldest Mexican restaurant in La Junta, which you can believe from the outside of the building. I went in as I am not fond of tourist fare, the place was small and modest inside, had a great economical menu, the waitress brought the chips and a spicy looking red salsa and the menu. Notably they had breakfast all day, several interesting dishes, and a choice of mild red, hot green and special order very hot. Unfortunately at that point I noticed the "no checks or credit cards or bank cards" and I didn't have cash. I will return as it looks like the real deal. Note: they serve Pepsi products but have alternatives.

I was in La Junta with my family recently for a reunion. We had Mexican food practically every meal, and hit both Mexicoo City and Lucy's Tacos. But El Azteca was the best of the bunch. They serve good, honest New Mexico-style fare, with excellent ingredients and perfectly spiced. The cheese enchiladas were spot on. The burrito was huge and delicious. Salsa excellent as was the red chilli. This will be my go-to place on future visits.

The beef chorizo tacos rock and are worth driving for. We routinely drive the hour and a half from Colorado Springs. The local specialty is vermicelli and is not to be missed. The ambiance may be a little "hole in the wall," but ignore it and let your tastebuds be dazzled.

I have been eating here for over 40 years. Absolutely the best Mexican food. When our children come home for a visit, they insist on eating here as well.

Old school Mexican food of the 50s. Great salsa. Small but filling plates, sides are ordered along with the mains. Great service and damn quick kitchen.

Food was good. Service was a little lacking. Restaurant had way too many house flies. They kept landing in our food.

I don't know what the other reviewers ate, but I couldn't have had more blan food. Sorry, but this place is pitiful.

Family restaurant since 1950. Basic menu. Excellent service in a small dimly-lit establishment. One light bulb in a four socket ceiling fan just doesn't provide enough light. This isn't a romantic outing, only an ordinary meal! Green chile is fabulous! The mild version, that is. Order their red hot if you dare. Tamales were decent.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
